Review: Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler

26 October 2013

Every so often I hear about a product that seems to get a massive amount of hype. Hype gets me excited. I was after a set of eyelash curlers and after doing some research, it seemed clear that unless you get the Shu Uemura ones, then you needn’t bother. Usually I take such outlandish claims with a pinch of salt but I’d dabbled in a little eyelash curling activity in the past and was always left disappointed and wondering if I was doing it wrong.

The Shu Uemura eyelash curler is the most expensive I’ve come across – it sells for around £20. Despite living on the dregs of this month’s wages, I had to have them as soon as I calmed down from reading the rave reviews. It comes in a box with a spare pad (the experts say to change the pad after about 6 months and to throw the whole thing away after a year). You can’t buy the spare pads separately so you’re sort of left with no other choice than to turf them out and buy a new set.

The first thing I noticed was the lack of springy action compared to other curlers. The Shu Uemura one is happy enough to kind of hang in the position you leave it in. Not a particularly big deal but I think I prefer the springs.

Anyway, I found the curler best to use warmed up under a hair dryer first. Then I clamped away. So far I’ve managed to not pinch my eyelids but this is likely to happen soon because I’m clumsy.

As for the results, I think they speak for themselves. They’re very good but I’m not sure if my mind has been blown. Maybe my standards are too high (for once) but I do genuinely like these. I’ve used them every day since I got them. Something has to really impress me to work its way into my morning routine when I’m running late and trying to evenly apply liquid liner and end up with eyelid-print – you know the one?

P.S. Sorry about the shaky photography and messy eyes.

  • Good post. I’ve got to agree with you they are good but I was a bit disappointed after the hype. I’ve never been one for eyelash curlers so I’m not sure I would repurchase. I’ve heard the Japonesque eyelash curlers are better than these (for the same price) so I might try them next! x
