Review: Laura Mercier Under Eye Perfector Orange/Yellow

Laura Mercier Under Eye Perfector 1
For as long as I can remember, I’ve “suffered” from dark under eye circles, meaning I’m left looking like a distant cousin of the aubergine. They didn’t really bother me too much until I started wearing makeup a little more seriously and I’d notice that when I did my face, I’d be left with grey under eyes that didn’t look particularly appealing. I’d been through so many concealers, as well as those dubious green and purple coloured correctors (I could never find out where my poor dark circles stood in that complementary colours chart). I thought I was destined to be forever lumbered with my chimney-sweep look until I discovered what I was apparently getting all wrong…

I’m deducing that this won’t suit every skin tone but I read somewhere that a deep orange corrector is the magic ingredient required before blasting in with any sort of foundation or concealer. As soon as I accepted this piece of information, I was on the hunt for the elusive orange corrector. I was still a bit sceptical about the whole thing so I was looking for a high street brand (although I had discovered that Laura Mercier had one) but it was literally mission impossible. I got bored of traipsing up and down Boots looking for my elusive pot of magic (I could have asked one of the ladies working there but I wasn’t in a right state of mind for chat) so I gave up and went to Space NK where I picked up the Laura Mercier Under Eye Perfector in the colour Orange/Yellow. They also do a Mauve/Rose version which would probably be best for cooler skin tones.

The perfector itself comes in a tiny pot and as you can probably see, it’s got a very firm texture. I’m trying to think of something that’s similar in texture… Ah, I’d say it’s like a MAC Paint Pot? Quite hard when it’s in the pot then it softens slightly on contact with skin. You’ll probably also be able to see how deeply orange it is which may be a little frightening but I please be reassured by the fact you only need the tiniest bit.

I find the best way to use the Laura Mercier Under Eye Perfector is on clean, moisturised skin, using your ring finger (your index finger will be too aggressive). I sort of press it on, gently but firmly, while looking up, making sure I cover up all of the dark circles. When you’ve finished, you’ll be left with a slight orange tone around the eyes depending on how dark your skin is but it is much less orange on your face than it looks in the pot. After I’ve done this, I tend to put on my foundation, or if I decide not to put any on, I’ll put some concealer on in the same colour as the rest of my face.

You can see the difference in the photos – my dark eye circles are virtually undetectable. Please note that the “after” photo was taken with just the Under Eye Perfector BEFORE any concealer or foundation was applied. You can see how much of a difference there is.

As for the product itself, I have been using it every day and we have embarked on a passionate love affair. It’s genuinely an enjoyable part of my makeup routine and makes a big difference to how I look and feel. Although I’ll never be able to completely hide my circles, this product practically diminishes all traces of ashiness, giving me the optimum base for concealer application.

Just one more thing to add, if you have much paler skin than I do, this will still work! Mr TBL kindly volunteered to be my pale guinea pig (actually he insisted I “go mad” with my makeup collection for one night only) so I popped a little of the orange perfector then some concealer and it looked great! Really fresh and awake. (I think he liked it a little too much, his first reaction was “Oh, I look more Hollywood”)

Laura Mercier Under Eye Perfecter costs £18.50 and you can get it here.
